What Is a Slot?
A slot is a dynamic placeholder that either waits for content (a passive slot) or is called upon by a renderer to fill itself with content (an active slot). In this sense, slots are the dynamic container that holds and manages the content displayed on a Web page. The content is dictated by a scenario, which may reference a repository item or use an Add Items to Slot action or a targeter to fill the slot with its content. The result is the display of that content on the page, governed by the design of the slot’s template.
Slots are among the most popular forms of gambling, combining engineering acumen, mathematical know-how and psychological deceit in an attractive package. Despite their popularity, however, the inner workings of slot machines remain somewhat mysterious to players.
To play a slot machine, a player inserts cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, a paper ticket with a barcode into a designated slot on the machine’s cabinet.
