What is a Casino?
A casino is a gambling establishment offering table games and/or slot machines, and also often features other entertainment options such as live entertainment, hotels and restaurants, and even retail shops. It is most commonly associated with Las Vegas and Atlantic City but there are casinos in many other cities around the world as well.
Gambling has been a part of human culture for millennia. Some of the first recorded instances date back as far as 2300 BC China. Dice were used in Rome in 500 AD and playing cards became popular in the 1400s. Almost every civilization has used some form of gambling to entertain themselves.
Casinos can have a variety of security measures to prevent cheating and stealing by patrons and staff, either in collusion or independently. These include physical security forces and specialized surveillance departments that monitor the casino’s closed circuit television system, or CCTV. In addition to CCTV, most modern casinos employ other high-tech security measures to protect their guests and property.
The most famous casino in the world is probably Monte Carlo, located in Monaco. It is a Belle Epoque structure designed by Gobineau de la Bretonnerie that sits above the Mediterranean Sea in the principality’s Place du Casino. The casino has a luxurious feel and offers players a variety of gaming options including blackjack, poker, English roulette, French roulette, and more. This casino has been featured in several movies and books, most notably Ben Mezrich’s Busting Vegas in which MIT students were shown using advanced strategies to beat the house at various games.
