What is a Slot?

A narrow notch, groove, or opening, as a keyway in a machine, a slit for a coin in a vending machine, or an air gap between the wing and tail surfaces of some airplanes. Also: (aeronology) a controlled space in which an airplane can take off and land as scheduled by the air-traffic control authorities.

A period of time set aside for a particular activity: A television or radio programme’s ‘time slot’.

In slots, the term ‘taste’ is a reference to the small amount often paid out to keep players seated and continuously betting. Tilt is a term derived from electromechanical slot machines’ tilt switches which, when triggered by physical movement, would make or break a circuit and trigger an alarm. Modern slot machines no longer have tilt switches, but any kind of technical fault is still referred to as a ‘tilt’.

One effective slots strategy is looking for machines which have recently cashed out. Obviously, the higher the cashout amount, the better the chance of winning. However, beware of playing a machine that appears to be due to hit: every microprocessor-driven computer is going through thousands of combinations each minute and the chances of you hitting on the exact combination at that one-hundredth of a second are incredibly minute.

Getting greedy and betting more than you can afford to lose are the 2 biggest pitfalls when playing slots. Set your limits before you start and stick to them. Playing slots can be a fast and exhilarating experience, so don’t let it turn into a stressful one by spending more than you can afford to chase losses.
