Learn the Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where the object is to make a strong poker hand and win the pot. The pot is the total amount of bets placed in one deal by players who either call a raise or fold. There are many different variations of the game but the core principles are the same. Generally you must ante something (amount varies by game, in our games it’s typically a nickel) to get dealt cards and begin betting. Players bet into the pot in a clockwise direction. The highest poker hand wins the pot at the end of the hand.

You start the game with 2 cards in your hand that are unique to you and 5 community cards on the table that everyone can use. The goal is to make a five card poker hand that’s stronger than your opponents.

Once the first round of betting is complete the dealer puts three more cards face up on the board that anyone can use – this is called the flop. Now the game really gets interesting because there are lots of options to consider and bet on.

The best way to learn the rules is to play and watch experienced players. Observing how they bet and react to different situations will build your quick instincts. Eventually you’ll develop your own style. Keep in mind that even the top players are still learning and improving their game – it takes a lifetime to truly master poker!
